When two former Zuma alums get together, you know good things are going to happen. Such is the case with the newly opened KYU (pronounced “cue”) in Wynwood owned and operated by Executive Chef Michael Lewis and General Manager Steven Haigh.

Lewis and Haigh make quite the powerhouse front and back-of-house duo. Lewis has worked with chefs like Eric Ripert, David Bouley and Jean-Georges at the before he most recently was running the kitchen at Zuma. Haigh, originally from Britain, has worked in all areas of hospitality and also was most recently at Zuma as project and general manager at Zuma.

The restaurant takes over the former Shikany space with the grill itself is a centerpiece of the menu and also the restaurant. It showcases a interest mix of elements found around the neighborhood like concrete and local art with elements such as wood and metal to give it a fun and fresh vibe.

The inventive menu features plenty of delicious items. Highlights from the snacks included the Crunchy Kale, Crispy Pork Belly and Crab-Filled Buns, the Burrata topped with yuzu marmalade and Roasted Cauliflower. Giving a nod to ‘cue of the BBQ variety, dishes like the impressive Wagyu Beef Brisket served with plenty of sauces and toppings along with the Duck Breast “burnt ends” that the table also devoured. Get those dishes with a side of sake braised White Beans and you’ll be set. And It wouldn’t be a proper meal without dessert and KYU features a homemade Coconut Cake that will make even coconut haters believers.
